HISTORY
Rin was born into the cursed Sohma family, possessed by the spirit of the Chinese zodiac Horse and unable to hug a member of the opposite gender without transforming. But for all that most of her fellow cursed cousins had rough lives, her early childhood was idyllic. Or at least, it was until she questioned why her parents were always happy. With that innocent question, the tranquility she had always known was shown to be an act. Her parents lashed out at her, blaming her for all their problems and abusing her, physically and emotionally. Rin took it all without complaint, believing she deserved it, and hoping that one day things would go back to the way they were.
That day never came. After collapsing in the middle of the street and ending up hospitalized, her parents cut her out of their lives completely. She was devastated, and living with another cursed family member- Kagura, the Boar- and her mother, who at least somewhat got along, only made things harder for her. She grew cut off, unable to pull herself out of her own depression and misery.
Her only comfort was fellow cursed family member Hatsuharu (the Ox), who came to her and befriended her. The two fell in love, keeping their relationship a secret out of fear of how their head of family would react. Akito, the head of their family, eventually did discover their relationship, and (s)he lashed out at Rin, telling Rin that she was unneccessary and pushing her out of a building. So Rin broke up with Hatsuharu to protect him (without cluing HIM on why, naturally), and vowed to find a cure for the family curse and free him from Akito's control.
But her quest turned out hopeless, and she despaired of ever finding anything. She met an outsider who knew the family's secret curse, a girl named Honda Tohru, and the two formed a tentative bond. Tohru also wanted to find a cure for the curse, Rin continued to look for one on her own. Unfortunately, Rin was misled, leading to getting caught by Akito and locked into solitary confinement.
